The Christmas Art Challenge

Senior School Art

Over the summer, Mrs Thomas, Head of Art, set some of the girls a challenge. These are the entries.

Asma's 'Yuki Town' (snow in Japanese)

I considered the fact that the design should be from the heart. An image that comes to my mind when I think of winter. As a fan of Studio Ghibli, a scene from “The Cat Returns” inspired the architecture of the buildings. I wanted to create something that is different, that is colourful, and detailed. Something that makes me look at, and think of Christmas, in the most beautiful way.

Natasha's 'Christmas Wreath'

First, I used pencil to mark out the outer and inner ring of the wreath, then I used pencil to sketch in the ornaments. For the black outline, I used a medium marker and for the other features and cross hatching on the inside I used a 0.5mm fine liner. Then I used watercolour to make it colourful, starting with the ornaments. On the letters on the ribbon, I used a white gel pen.

Every Christmas, my family has a wreath hung on our door, which welcomes all our guests to our home. The wreath is not only a traditional symbol of Christmas, it also invokes nostalgic warmth.  To reflect this, I chose to design my card as a coloured old newspaper illustration. Although this year has been very confusing and chaotic; I hope my drawing can bring up fond memories of the past as we take the next step and conclude this year.

Tia's 'Christmas Colour'

I decided that a lot of Christmas is to do with the colours you see and finding joy in the little things. Through that, I considered how the Pantone colours are used to represent colours on digital art. So I choose to make a scene bursting out of the colour shade that I thought represented Christmas. In this, I also added little details (like the bird on the deer’s antlers) to show the joy in the big and little things.

Rhian's 'A Blue Forest’

I wanted to draw something simple but effective, which is why I drew a forest with a blue background to represent the School with a red reindeer to add a pop of colour. My inspiration was when I went walking in a forest in the snow which was a spectacular sight, and I wanted to share it with others.

Thenuki’s ‘A Penguin Family’

For my design I chose penguins because global warming is happening, and it is affecting penguins. (and, because they look so cute!) And I thought that it should be a family because I feel like Christmas should be spent with your family and who you love most.

Victoria’s 'Hush'

When choosing the 'concept' for this card, I chose to go with a peaceful winter concept instead of the usual lively Christmas cards with red and green hues, because I think everyone would agree that 2020 has been a rather overwhelming year, and the last thing everyone needs at the end of such a hectic year is a bold and overwhelming card; everyone would just want a simplistic one that brings a little peace and comfort to them.

Libby’s ‘Woodland in Winter’

I always wanted to do a winter scene and considered many different animals before deciding on a deer. I wanted the drawing to be quite calm with the snow, deer and trees.

Angel’s ‘Reindeer Lights’

I didn't want my Christmas card design to be too complicated, therefore I decided on the simple concept of a reindeer with some Christmas lights wrapped around its antlers, which was the first idea that came to my mind. I also mainly used warm colours in the painting to create a feeling of cosiness and warmth, which is what I personally feel when I think of Christmas.
