Sixteen fantastic films, made by 28 pupils, including those from Badminton vied for prizes in this years’ Lizzies Film Competition held by QEH School. Pupils submitted their films to the competition in March after which the Lizzies’ film industry judges reviewed the movies and discussed which should win prizes. It was a tough judging process because the competition was tight, but the awards were decided and finally announced to all the film makers last Friday via the Lizzies Awards Announcement Video.
Five Badminton girls entered films into the competition: Hannah (Year 10), Lucy (Year 8), Aliza (Year 8), and Lauren (Year 8) from the Senior School and Sade (J6) and Jessica (J4) from the Juniors.
All five Badminton film makers created great films, but Hannah’s poignant reflection of life under COVID-19 did exceptionally well – winning the ‘Best Editing’ and overall ‘Best Live Action Film’ prizes!
Aliza’s film - a tale of treachery in space – won ‘Best Script’ while Lucy’s thoughtful film about lockdown scooped nominations for ‘Best Editing’, ‘Live Action Film’ and ‘Emerging Talent’ and Jessica’s tense animation made with Sylvanian Family figures also did very well – being nominated for ‘Best Animation’, ‘Sound’ and ‘Emerging Talent’.
You can watch all 16 Lizzies film entries and read the judges feedback on each in the Lizzies Awards Announcement Video. Alternatively, watch the Badminton film entries by clicking on the links below.
Congratulations to Hannah, Lucy, Lauren, Sade and Jessica for their tremendous creativity and determination in making their fantastic Lizzies films.
The Lizzies Team
For the Lizzie’s Film making Competition, based on the title, ‘What Just Happened?’ I created an animation about an alien in outer space travelling to different places around the world.
What happens in the story is that he is bored and wants to go exploring in the human world, so, he puts on his “special shades” and then teleports to earth. He explores most of the countries until his shades glitch teleporting him back to space.
The alien then meets an unknown astronaut who he encounters, spreading a virus to the alien ‘Googly Abbibly’ who was not immune to the virus. The alien blows up and gets sucked into a black hole; he wakes up to find that it was all a terrible nightmare!
Making this animation was very fun, as I got to experience the different techniques and add plenty of vibrant colours to create the scenes and tell the story. It took me a month to complete the animation, but in the end it all paid off! Overall, it was an excellent experience and I would do it again.
Lauren, Year 8
As one of the longest-entering competitors of the Lizzies Filmmaking Competition, my fifth year of making short movies has been slightly different due to the circumstances.
From script to screen, the whole progress for my friend and I was all completed over calls and messages which was a challenge, but my friend is great with technology, and I have learnt a lot from her, so we managed well.
My favourite part of participating in the Lizzies Filmmaking Competition has always been acting in the movies I have made with my friend over the years. It was the main reason I started competing. Watching our finished pieces is also something we enjoy doing too though.
I look forward to competing next year, and after winning an award this year for ‘Best Script,’ I hope for more!
