Badminton School

Pre-Reception and Reception

We welcome girls from the September after their third birthday into our Pre-Reception class and from the September after their fourth birthday into our Reception class. We use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to inform our curriculum and teaching. It sets the standards to ensure that all children learn and develop, as well as keeping them safe, healthy and well-rounded girls.

Meet Miss McInerney, our Reception Class Teacher, and EYFS Coordinator

“I started as the Early Years Coordinator at Badminton in September 2024, after working in a range of early years settings in the UK and abroad. Every day, I strive to help my pupils access their learning to the fullest, foster an environment of fun whilst simultaneously teaching them respect and other important life lessons. These things are so important to get right in Early Years as children learn more from the ages of 0-5 years old that they do in the rest of their life. Their young brains are so malleable and I aim to enthuse, inspire and offer the answers to their many questions through play-based learning, continuous provision, enriching new experiences and most importantly, joy!”

Pre-Reception

We welcome girls into Pre-Reception in the September after their third birthday. It’s the perfect starting block for girls to transition into the Prep School. Our flexible timetable and supportive environment mean that we can work together to build the best structure for your daughter’s education and for you. After their year in Pre-Reception girls will continue their journey into our Reception class.

Transition from Nursery to School

We want to ensure that there’s a smooth transition for girls from their nursery setting to reception. Before your daughter starts, she can attend our Stay and Play sessions to meet prospective peers, staff and familiarise herself with the classroom and play areas.

Our class teacher will also visit your daughter’s nursery, this helps your daughter familiarise herself with her new teacher in a setting she is comfortable in. We will also provide your daughter with a social story for you to read to them over the summer holiday before she starts. This helps to familiarise themselves with Badminton and attending ‘big school’.

Classroom Environment

We have a dedicated early years classroom and a secure play area. Girls have access to other Prep School areas such as our rough patch for outdoor learning and the Arctic Cabin! They also use the facilities of the Senior School including the swimming pool, astro and sports centre.

Learning and Curriculum

We follow the EYFS Statutory Framework, which involves seven key areas of learning. These are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Through a combination of building positive relationships, the flexibility of the curriculum and a range of learning activities that are rich, engaging and diverse, your daughter will be given a comprehensive education here at Badminton, which aims to inspire a love of lifelong learning.

We use the ILD (Interactive Learning Diary) to observe, assess and to communicate with parents about all the exciting learning we are doing at school. We encourage you as a parent to contribute this, to deepen your daughters learning even further!
