On Saturday 28th April, the Science Outreach Team, which consisted of both Year 10s and the Lower Sixth, had the fortunate opportunity to present the Liquid Nitrogen and the Magnetism Show at Weston-Super-Mare’s Big Bang Fair.

The Big Bang is a series of National Science Fairs around the UK which promote STEM to a ranging audience. There were a variety of stands there including: the Henry vacuum, Army Defence, Edwards, RS and many other companies and Universities.

The event was spread across two days, with Saturday being open to the general public. It was incredible as it was a wonderful opportunity to be involved in bringing the joys of Science to the wider community. The Liquid Nitrogen Show included a range of mesmerising demonstrations, including ‘tickling’ frozen flower petals, hammering blu-tack nails soaked in liquid nitrogen into wood and deflating then inflating a balloon again.

Crowds grew larger throughout the day, and many families returned to watch the demos for a second time! We definitely couldn’t have done this without the wonderful Lower Sixth Science Outreach Team, and of course, Mr. Williams. Overall, it was an amazing experience; not only did we learn more about liquid nitrogen and have an incredible time at the fair, we also gained plenty of confidence in delivering an excellent performance and communicating with the audience. The whole team was exceptional, and it was an absolute success!

The Big Bang Fair at Weston-Super-Mare was a particularly extraordinary event for me as I had the most incredible opportunity to demonstrate and explain the Curie point of dysprosium to the Mayor of Weston-Super-Mayor! With possibly our best quote ever of: “My life began today, I can’t believe there is so much more to the world that has been hidden.” It was so rewarding to see such an important figure so intrigued in our demonstrations. Additionally, it was equally as heart warming to see people of all ages and backgrounds coming up to say how much they enjoyed their experience and how they now aspire to be a Scientist.
