Operation Smile is a charity that provides surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for people, throughout a country for free. As a Smile Ambassador for Operation Smile Thailand, I went on a Smile Mission this week!
The first day of this mission was ‘Screening Day’ where patients register and have a physical examination with doctors. I helped organise the queues and made sure everyone got to the appropriate station they needed.
The second day of the mission was the ‘Surgery Day’. I spent some time with the children playing with toys I gave them before surgery. After that, I had a chance to observe an operation! The patient was an adorable 3-month-old baby who was born with unilateral cleft lift. I watched as the surgeon stitched his lip and was able to send him to the recovery room once finished.
The poor baby was crying from the pain until his grandmother came in and put held him in her arms where the baby finally smiled for the first time. It was such an incredible experience!
