We were delighted this week to find out that Lower Sixth student Helena was the winner of ‘The Lord Toulson Essay Prize in Law’ run by Jesus College, Cambridge.

The Lord Toulson Essay Prize in Law, in honour of the late Lord Roger Toulson, is intended to give students a chance to engage with important legal debates and to explore the kind of issues that they would be exposed to in a Cambridge law degree. Each candidate is assessed on their ability to think critically about the question and on the quality and originality of the argument made.

The prize was open to all students worldwide who are in their final or penultimate year of school.

Reflecting on her success, Helena said:

“I am delighted to have received the news that I have been awarded the Lord Toulson Essay Prize in Law given by Cambridge University in honour of the late Lord Toulson, the former Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. At the end of April this year, I submitted an entry for the essay competition where I explored the challenging statement: ‘The government should take control of unoccupied homes and allocate them to the homeless.’

Having critically analysed the question, I formulated a strong and compelling argument whilst highlighting the different issues the question raises. I found writing the essay to be very thought-provoking and I very much enjoyed the experience.”
