Science Outreach

On the 23rd of November, 23 members of the Science Outreach team from Year 10 to Lower Sixth presented at the Festival of Physics at the University of Plymouth hosted by the Institute of Physics. This event was the first Science Outreach activity for some of the girls. This was a perfect chance to learn from the more experienced girls in terms of knowledge, leadership and presentation skills.

Throughout the day, many interested families visited our workshop. The audience were impressed by our Mysterious Realm of Superconductors as well as the Compressed Guide to the Atmosphere demonstrations. Our workshop focused mainly on liquid nitrogen, superconductors, resistance, electromagnetism and diamagnetism, which attracted a large audience. The new Sixth Form team seized the opportunity to lead and perform in front of our audience.

After the workshop, we performed our Compressed Guide to the Atmosphere demonstrations, based on liquid nitrogen, dry ice, pressure and atmospheric phenomena. The public were stunned and enjoyed the pressure and atmosphere phenomena despite it being outdoors, and quite a few families came back multiple times they liked the demonstrations so much.

We received outstanding feedback on our performances which was rewarding for all of us, particularly those of us who are first-timers. The students who joined Science Outreach this Term now have a clearer idea about what it is like to do a high profile event and had a better understanding of the principles behind the demonstrations. We are now more confident in our perspective areas and roles.

It was a wonderful experience and we are looking forward to our next Outreach event!
