Year 7 enjoyed at day at the theatre recently. In the morning, the girls took part in a workshop in the studio space at the Bristol Old Vic and, after lunch, they watched a matinee performance of the theatre’s production of ‘The Little Mermaid’. The show was extraordinarily creative in its adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale. A combination of physical theatre, imaginative sets – along with the use of trapeze and soundscapes – served to capture Andersen’s underwater world and its swimming inhabitants. The workshop prepared the girls well for what they were about to see in the production.
After a number of drama games to sharpen their minds and awaken their bodies, they experimented with many of the same techniques that were used in the show, and were even able to see the model of the set that the show’s designers had made. Overall, there was much to enjoy and to interest the girls throughout the day, and – of course – ice cream at the interval added to the fun!
