Recently the mercury in the thermometers has been plummeting and Badminton celebrated by inviting Westbury-on-Trym Primary Academy in to share our famous liquid nitrogen show on the morning of Thursday 21st February. Abi, Lucy, Stephanie and Lucy, all members of the VIB Science Outreach team, delivered an outstanding talk on low temperature physics in the Main Hall, capped off with a demonstration of how to make ice cream the Badminton way!
Equipment purchased for the low temperature talks was partly funded by the Institute of Physics, who were keen to support Badminton in providing strong role models of girls engaged with the physical sciences. The talk wowed the pupils from Westbury with lots of exciting demonstrations such as making functional nails with blu-tack, getting balls to spin under jet propulsion and size changing balloons, not to mention the taste explosion that is our famous double berry ice cream.
Westbury’s visit was a great success with the sixth form girls all delivering fun, engaging and inspiring talks that left the children buzzing. The professionalism and flowing nature of the talks showed just how much work that all the girls had put into the show and their performance was a credit to their efforts.
After the liquid nitrogen show, the children from Westbury joined us for lunch in the Dining Hall. Feedback from both staff and students was overwhelmingly positive and many people commented on how lucky we are to have such high quality food prepared by Mr Clark and his team!
