The Northern Ireland Science Festival is an amazing collection of workshops and shows that happen every year in February throughout Northern Ireland, attracting around 80,000 participants. Last year one of our final engagements before the pandemic came upon us was presenting our liquid nitrogen show in Derry–Londonderry and Belfast.
Sadly, at the moment it is not possible to run in-person events. However, the Northern Ireland Science Festival is going full steam ahead online, and on the strength of the team’s performance last year, we were invited to present again in 2021!
Our contribution kicked off on Wednesday 10th February with the first part of a series of two Science at Home workshops, where girls from Year 10 with and mentored by the Lower Sixth Science Outreach Leadership Team showed our visitors how to make red cabbage indicator and do some chromatography with things you can find in your kitchen cupboard!
The team did magnificently well, keeping their Year 5 audiences engaged and making science come alive for them! The children who participated had great fun and it was it was amazing to see their eyes lighting up, as they had the chance to practical work for the first time in several months!
We will be following up with our second workshop on Thursday afternoon, investigating chemical reactions through the medium of acids alkalis and throwing in a little bit of slime making for good measure!
