City Wait Music Award for Anisha

Senior School Music

From medieval times up to the beginning of the 19th century, every British town and city of any note had a band of waits, an ancient term for a piper. Their duties included playing their instruments through the town at night, waking the townsfolk on dark winter mornings by playing under their windows, welcoming Royal visitors by playing at the town gates, and leading the Mayor’s procession on civic occasions!

This ancient tradition fell out of use in 1835 but has been revived here in Bristol, and now takes the form of a financial award made to promising young musicians in recognition of the high standard of musicianship they have achieved and their involvement in music making in the city of Bristol. In return, the City Waits perform at civic occasions in and around Bristol during the year.

We are delighted to announce that Anisha in 6A has been selected by the Guild of Guardians and Bristol Plays Music to serve as a City Wait for 2014-15. She will be one of only two City Waits to serve for one year. The award, along with a cheque for £750 to help with musical studies, was presented by the Lord Mayor of Bristol last week at the Mansion House in Clifton. Congratulations Anisha!
