Senior School Outreach

On Friday 28th June our Sixth Form Science Outreach team arrived at Northleaze Church Of England of England Primary School to give their renowned set of liquid nitrogen demonstration to the school’s Year 4 and Year 5 students. The students settled down to watch the demonstrations with great enthusiasm and a promise of some very special ice cream!

The Outreach team started by teaching them what would happen when items like bananas, Blue-Tac and balloons, were cooled down by putting them into a Dewar of liquid nitrogen. Several children from the audience were invited to join in the demonstrations, for example hitting a frozen banana with a wooden hammer and causing it to shatter into sharp fragments!

The young children were very excited and curious about the science presented to them and our Science Outreach team did a fantastic job in teaching them some interesting and new scientific knowledge and inspiring them greatly in the process.

As promised, the talk was finished off with our famous double berry ice cream made with the remaining liquid nitrogen. Every single child enjoyed the outcome of making liquid nitrogen ice cream immensely!

Once again, we would like to thank Bristol University for the liquid nitrogen used in these demonstrations and the Institute of Physics for contributing towards the cost of the equipment used. Their generosity has provided our Outreach team with a wonderful opportunity to promote Science to the wider community, showcasing a very positive role model of girls engaged with the Physical Sciences, as well as developing their communication skills and offering them the chance of working with materials that are unusual for people of their age.
