On Friday 30th November The Magic Lantern Society visited the Art Department and performed for the girls and invited guests, enchanting them with the history of the Magic Lantern. The girls learned that the first lanterns were produced in the 1650s and were used to project hand painted glass slides onto a wall. During the performance the audience was treated to storylines that were both dramatic and romantic, and at the conclusion of the show all were delighted by the ultimate 'special effects' of the lantern repertoire, which resembled a giant kaleidoscope of moving colours. After the show the girls were able to satisfy their curiosity by looking at the glass slides up close, as well as the magnificent wooden and brass lantern itself which was made in the 19th Century.
