I had the great pleasure this evening of accompanying for Flora, Year 10, at the Grand Final of the Rotary Avon Young Musician of the Year competition. Despite being a clear two or three years younger than all other competitors, Flora won the competition and will play a concerto with the orchestra in early 2021. A remarkable achievement given the incredible standard of all the other finalists.
In such a high-pressured environment, Flora demonstrated impressive levels of maturity to produce the kind of performance she gave. Her playing of both the Bach and Barber showed the incredible levels of technical skill and musicality she is capable of. The standard of all performances throughout the evening was very high indeed, though Flora did seem to have the edge on all the other competitors. She was a thoroughly deserving winner and should be very proud of this achievement.
