On Thursday, May 16th, Year 8 enjoyed a day visiting both a Mosque and a Church as part of their Religious Studies curriculum.

We started the day at the Bristol Central Mosque where Afreena in 8Y showed us how to wear a headscarf in the Mosque as a sign of respect. The talk was very interesting and Rizwan answered as many of the girls’ questions as he could.  In addition, he taught us the way to pray in a Muslim fashion and explained the meaning behind the words said.  Ms Hunter, Ms Summers and myself were very impressed with how many of Rizwan’s questions the girls also managed to answer.

The girls were allowed to explore the Mosque and see all the parts that we learnt about in lessons including the washroom and the prayer carpet that you can see in the picture.

In the afternoon we visited the Holy Trinity Church in Westbury Village.  The girls listened to a talk about symbolism in the church and the history of it which dates back to Norman times.  After a few minutes, once again, the girls were allowed to explore the church and see parts that they hadn’t seen before.  They particularly enjoyed being allowed up to the altar and having a closer look at the stained glass windows.

We were very proud of the girls and thoroughly enjoyed our time with them.
