The BASE Competition

Sixth Form Humanities - Business & Economics

The BASE Competition is a business and accounting competition held by ICAEW, where Badminton has previously been successful in reaching the Finals. This year, two groups of Lower Sixth pupils have entered, overcoming the additional communication challenges, and have found that working as a team has given them additional skills.

The first round of BASE was an online game which featured a series of short videos, telling the stories of four accountants advising on an investment project. We were asked questions based on the scenario and how we would respond to the situations as a team.

The second round was recommending the optimal warehouse solution for a company and giving a five-minute video presentation. As my team members were in different countries because of the pandemic, we had meetings on Teams twice every week. It was hard to do a team project virtually, but I think we managed it quite well! Having meetings regularly allowed us to discuss every single detail and made the script coherent.

After a discussion, we chose a solution and worked on parts of the script including analysing the data and justifying why we chose it. I have found this process really developed my communication and problem-solving skills.

Working online in a team for the first time was a unique and challenging experience. The BASE Competition gave me an understanding of what it is like to be an accountant and sharpened my employability skills. I really enjoyed taking part in this competition and we are hopeful that we are will be successful in qualifying for the Finals!
