On Wednesday 6th December, Year 10 spent a day being inspired in the Chemistry Department at Bristol University.

In the morning, they extracted caffeine from tea using all the high tech apparatus in the undergraduate laboratories. Having taken all necessary safety steps, including laboratory over-boots for some, they successfully extracted the caffeine and then carried out a spectral analysis of it using a diamond impregnated spectrometer. The afternoon was spent in lectures given by experts in climate change and nanotechnology. It concluded with a variety of energetic demonstrations.
