June 16th 2017
Twenty-two intrepid Year 7s embarked on a four day extravaganza in Jersey, with ice cream, from 16th to 19th June 2017. Day one started with an excited troop of Year 7s navigating Bristol airport to board our flight to Jersey. On arrival in Jersey the girls were introduced to Jersey Zoo, getting to know Badongo (the silverback Gorilla) and Hazel and George (the Gibbons) followed by some time spent playing games in the garden and settling in at our hostel.
On day two, the girls were up bright and early to start their animal studies; investigating the enrichments available to the primates and if the enclosures were suitable. Numerous ethograms later, the girls stopped for a brief lunch in the sun followed by a short coach ride to Jersey War Tunnels. During their time underground, they explored the displays gaining a greater understanding of life in Jersey during the occupation in WW2. Isla was victorious in our war tunnels competition ensuring she achieved the most correct answers in her booklet. On a high from her win, Isla led the group to St. Brelade beach, where we experienced our first real Jersey ice cream! The girls braved the cold sea and Elizabeth led the expedition to dig a giant hole. Calmly at the top of the beach Dru was turned into a mermaid complete with a sand tail. After brushing off the sand we finished the day in Pizza Express.
On day three the girls woke a little later to return to the zoo to investigate conservation and biodiversity amongst a variety of species from Bats to Lemurs. The afternoon saw the girls exploring Mont Orgueil Castle, catching a glimpse of France from the top battlements. Meghan, Amelia, Alice and Simran were victorious here as they noted the most number of defensive features as well as discovering a more primitive form of scaffolding. The weather was beautiful, therefore, it seemed an appropriate time for the girls to cool off by sampling some more Jersey ice cream! With the sun still shining there remained a little time to head back to the zoo and finish their animal studies.
Day four, our final day, saw the girls present their work on conservation and animal behaviour and the staff presented some prizes. All girls were a true asset to the School and took on an active role in every task they undertook. They returned to School tired but happy from this thoroughly enjoyable trip.
