On Monday 18th November, Badminton School was visited by the 1990 Yachtsman of the Year and first female skipper to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, Tracy Edwards MBE.
Tracy gave a passionate speech to girls at the School on perseverance through adversity, believing in yourself, and empowering other women to do the same. She discussed her historic entry in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race and the barriers, set by the industry and society that she had to break in order to do so.
The 2018 documentary, ‘Maiden’, an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival, was inspired by her journey and shown to the girls in preparation for Tracy’s arrival.
Since the famous voyage, Edwards has founded ‘The Maiden Factor’ and ‘The Maiden Factor Foundation’ which raises money to ensure girls across the globe receive an education.
Deputy Head (School Development), Ms Singleton has said “In one afternoon, Tracy really made an impact, with staff and pupils aplenty discussing how inspirational the speech was. We hope to continue to be involved with ‘The Maiden Factor’s work going forward.”
