On the weekend of 28th July, Badminton School’s Science Outreach Team were invited back to WOMAD Festival for the second year running to perform their self-curated science demonstrations in the Physics Pavilion.

The Physics Pavilion is hosted by CERN; the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, the Institute of Physics, Lancaster University and the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and was a new addition to the WOMAD line up last year. It gives festival attendees an opportunity to watch an exhilarating and entertaining programme of science demonstrations in between musical performances from around the world.

The Badminton girls opened the day’s events on Saturday morning where they presented a range of science demonstrations including “The Whistling Kettle”, “Smokey Bubbles” and “Exploding Pringle Tin” to a diverse crowd of around 300 people. The girls professionally executed demonstrations that many of them had only seen prior to the festival but had not yet attempted themselves, making them that inch more exciting and impressive.

The physicists from CERN were so impressed by the confidence and talent of the Badminton girls that they later asked if a couple of members of the team could step in to help them with their ‘Cloud Chambers’ workshop. To add further acclaim, on the Sunday, the girls were given the honour of leading some of the workshop’s tables, rather than being second in command; praise indeed from the world leaders in scientific research.

Mr Williams, Head of Science Outreach at Badminton, commented: “Each and every girl from our Science Outreach Team should be extremely proud of themselves. They represented Badminton on a national stage and did so with the utmost professionalism and confidence”.
