J3 have recently completed their topic on the Celts. They finished the topic this Wednesday with a ‘Virtual Celt workshop’ presented by the Museum of Wales.
The girls had an opportunity to find out about the Celts by asking the museum staff some really interesting questions. They discovered that mushrooms were used to catch the sparks from the flint stone as they were more combustible than wooden sticks. They also found out that the smoke from the fire in the round house would rise into the roof and kill off germs and bugs, providing a good storage place for meats to dry and be preserved by the smoke.
The Celts were also very resourceful and would use every part of an animal they hunted by using their meat for food, their skin and fur for warmth and even their bones were used to make hair combs. They learnt that a Celts’ life was very busy with all the jobs they had to do including: keeping a fire continuously going; grinding wheat to make bread; weaving a tunic or blanket that would take a year to make and looking after their farm animals.
There was not much spare time but when they did the children had small wooden toys to play with. J3 enjoyed the workshop, seeing all the artefacts and replica items that the museum staff had to show them.
