Junior School Art

The girls in the Junior School have all been practising their skills across a range of media, with J5 and J6 being particularly excited about their entries for the annual Mary Fedden competition. The theme this year was the root word ‘WONDER’.

J5 chose to look at Picasso’s ‘Blue’ and ‘Rose’ periods, focusing on things that make them feel either happy or sad. Lots of important messages for the social conscience were discussed! J6 chose ‘Wonderland’ as a theme and focused on images from the original story of Alice.

The Exhibition will be virtual this year, and invites will be emailed out in due course.

J3 and J4 have been learning about art that focus on ‘Remembrance’ – in particular they explored images of the installations at the Tower of London, created by artist Tom Piper.

In 2014, the Tower of London marked the centenary of the outbreak of The First World War with the commemorative art installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’, which saw the moat filled with thousands of ceramic poppies.

The girls learnt how to use both poster paint and watercolours for creating their poppy images, with huge success and from next week, with specific protocols in place and lots of disposable aprons, some of the girls will be exploring ceramics once more, using the natural world as a focus for their work!
