On Saturday, 27th September, ten girls from J5 and J6 went to the Bath Children's Literature Festival for an event sponsored by Badminton School.
We arrived at Bristol Temple Meads and met Mrs Cotterell. She took us on the train with some of the parents who wanted to come too. We walked from Bath Spa station to the Guildhall which is an amazing building. There we were greeted by the organisers of the event and taken to a special room with a semi-circle of leather chairs. It looked rather like a court room and there were portraits of the past mayors of Bath on the walls.
Martin Brown, the illustrator of the Horrible Histories, came to talk to us about his work. He made us laugh by going to the front podium and speaking to us as if he was the Prime Minister saying he had always wanted to sound important. Then he talked to us about his drawing and how it was easy to learn technique and that everyone thinks they are bad at drawing but drawings can be improved and made better, you just have to practise and keep trying. He signed some books for the Badminton Junior School Library and then we all went to the large conference room for the main event. There Lily and Sarah spoke to over 250 people to introduce Martin which was nerve-racking for them. He told us about his grandfather in World war One and drew a picture of a man sinking in the mud with a horse standing by and watching. He asked the audience to suggest a speech bubble and one boy said "I wish I had never signed up!" It was great fun going to Bath and we were proud to be part of the event.
