SIR HUGH CASSON

Badminton School is extremely privileged to have several of its campus buildings architecturally designed by Sir Hugh Casson. Having completed The Casson Library in 1968, he then went on to design the original Sixth Form Centre in 1976 and finally the extension to the Science Block in 1987.

Born in 1910, Sir Hugh Casson studied architecture at Cambridge University. During his distinguished career, he designed interiors for the Royal Albert Hall, the Savoy Hotel, the restaurant design for Fortnum & Mason, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York as well as rooms in No. 10 Downing Street.

As testament to his excellence in his profession, Sir Hugh Casson was also commissioned to decorate Her Majesty’s Royal Yacht Britannia, Buckingham Palace, Balmoral, Windsor Castle and the Royal Train. He remained a friend of the Royal Family until his death in 1999 and is credited with having taught Charles, Prince of Wales, to paint in watercolour.
