On Monday 23rd April, we welcomed award winning Illustrator, Korky Paul, famous for 'Winnie the Witch', to Badminton to celebrate International World Book Day.
He spent time with Years 5 & 6, enthralling them with his hilarious storytelling, singing and skilful character drawing. He created a strange creature using their imagination called 'Snorky Snorkle' which was then presented as a gift to the Junior School. What a delight!
His time with Years 7 and 8 was extremely rewarding. He undertook a practical drawing session called ‘The Art of Drawing’ and created two characters based on their imagination with them. Later, girls created some excellent illustrations using their imagination under his guidance. Teachers joined in the fun too!
The girls in Year 9 had an insight into his journey of creating a character starting from a pencil sketch to the finished piece of work ready for publication. He talked to them about use of colours and colouring techniques when using watercolours. He mesmerised them with his live 'Winnie the Witch' illustration again picking on imaginative ideas from girls and obliging a request to illustrate Winnie on a sausage dog (which he admitted was something he did for the first time!).
It was indeed a memorable day for all! Korky’s visit inspired girls to create their own book and illustrations. His enthusiasm and energy successfully captivated all age groups in our community.
Korky's main message to girls was that to be a good illustrator, pens, pencils and paper were secondary as IMAGINATION is the key element needed for a good illustration and story.
We hope to display Snorky Snorle, Dorky Doorle, Dorky Dorlle and Winnie the Witch soon for all pupils and staff to appreciate.
