On Thursday 28th January, the Lower Sixth had the exciting opportunity to attend a talk about feminism and the law hosted by Sarah Mumford, who is not only a Governor but is an Old Badmintonian here. We had the opportunity to learn about how laws regarding women’s rights have changed over time. One fact that I was personally interested in was that sexual discrimination only became illegal less than 100 years ago.
It was a great opportunity to realise the significant extent of the progress made in recent years for women rights and further be able to obtain expert advice on our future careers as women also.
- Helena, Lower Sixth
The talk was also ‘attended’ by other schools in the Bristol Education Partnership. We received excellent feedback from Mr Drinkwater, a teacher at Clifton College:
Sarah's historical survey engagingly and approachably covered both familiar and less familiar areas of legislative progress and women since the 19th century, and the on-going ramifications. As illuminating were her many, more general and trenchant aperçus about work, life, personal fulfilment, as well as a well-drawn parallel between ourselves and those in previous global crises in terms of the acceleration of change. With her opinions expressed directly, practically and without any shyness about political correctness in terms of promoting the healthiest strategies for success, I can certainly see why Badminton and your pupils benefit from having her on the governorship.
